Blue Reef Aquarium ENJOY THE ULTIMATE UNDERSEA SAFARI AT THE AWARD-WINNING BLUE REEF AQUARIUM From Local Waters to Tropical ParadiseWelcome to Blue Reef Aquarium. We want to show you all the fantastic creatures that live in our seas and oceans. Our displays take you on an undersea tour through the marine world; from the British coastline to faraway tropical reefs and lots more in between. During your visit you’ll come face to face with everything from giant crabs and lobsters to seahorses and tropical sharks and, what’s more, you’ll get a chance to find out more about these creatures’ amazing lives in over 40 naturally recreated displays. At the Aquarium’s heart is a giant ocean tank where an underwater walkthrough tunnel offers incredibly close-up views of a beautiful tropical coral reef – home to hundreds of colourful fish. Our aim is to showcase some of the natural wonders of the underwater world and help explain why it’s so vitally important to look after them. Our aquarists love the marine world and many of them spend as much time as possible in it, on it or under it! They also enjoy talking about it and we actively encourage questions from visitors who want to find out more.   Close EncountersEveryone here at Blue Reef believes it’s only by getting close to and, in some cases, actually being able to touch marine creatures that you’re fully able to appreciate just how incredible they really are.Our displays are specifically designed to allow you to get as near as possible to everything from seahorses to stingrays.We also run daily ‘meet the creatures’ sessions where visitors can enjoy hands-on encounters with a variety of sturdy rockpool animals like crabs, starfish and sea cucumbers. Blue Reef ConservationWe aim to inspire a deeper interest in the marine environment by ‘opening a window into the world beneath the waves’. But it’s not just theory; we’re involved in practical conservation work such as rescue, rehabilitation and release work with stranded turtles and injured seal pups.Our dedicated team of aquarists are also part of pioneering captive breeding programmes for a wide range of both native and tropical species. Look out for the Blue Reef Nursery displays which are home to everything from captive bred baby clownfish to special coral propagation units. Recent breeding successes include sharks, rays, seahorses, pipefish, cuttlefish and many more.  New For 2007 – Seahorse Ranch – NEWQUAY Seahorses have both amazed and enchanted humans since Classical times. This spectacular new column-shaped display is home to dozens of seahorses offering visitors the chance to observe these magical fish and the fascinating way they interact both with each other and their marine environment. Our aquarists are proud of their success in breeding endangered seahorse species - you can meet third, fourth and even fifth generation babies in the Blue Reef Nursery! Alongside the seahorses is a new display of garden eels, the first time these bizarre, snake-like fish have been seen at Blue Reef. Underwater WondersThe aquatic world is home to some truly incredible creatures. The sheer variety of their size, shape, colour and behaviour makes the world of land animals seem quite tame in comparison!From jellyfish and giant octopus to freshwater turtles, puffer fish and living corals, there are literally oceans of extraordinary characters to meet at the aquarium. Nothing’s ever quite what it seems either; there are fish that can walk, living fossils, creatures that can change shape and colour to fit their moods and even males that get pregnant and have babies! Every day is different at Blue Reef so there's always something new to discover. OPEN DAILY FROM 10amSpecial EventsBlue Reef has a busy calendar of events to keep the whole family entertained. During the 2007 season you could follow a treasure trail during Pirates Weekend, learn more about deadly predators, sign up to help save sharks, take part in a beach clean or create a piece of fishy-themed artwork for October’s Big Draw. Ticket Valid All Day With over 40 living displays featuring aquatic life from around the world – Blue Reef has plenty to offer visitors of all ages and visitors can come and go throughout the day. Family Friendly Under 3’s admitted free and family tickets are available. The aquarium is baby –friendly with changing facilities, high chairs and microwaves as well as baby food for sale. It’s accessible for pushchairs and the multi-level displays mean even the smallest family members get a great view! Family Fun Blue Reef is a great place for visitors of all ages to find out more about the wonders of the deep. There’s a full programme of entertaining talks and feeding demonstrations throughout the day. Learn about native shoreline creatures at a hands-on introduction to crabs, anemones and more at a rockpool encounter. Be sure to ask if you have any questions. Café – with sea views – sit back and relax in the Blue Reef Café. Gift Shop – the Blue Reef Shop is filled with a wide range of marine-themed gifts, souvenirs, educational toys, cards and posters to suit all pockets.  Children's Birthday Parties at Blue Reef Blue Reef parties are a fun and hassle-free way to celebrate birthdays in a safe controlled environment, which will provide an unforgettable experience for youngsters of all age groups. Themed parties are a particular favourite; these include:: Pirates Party - Join the Blue Reef Pirate Raiding Party! Each child will be presented with an eye-patch and cutlass before joining Blue Reef’s very own pirate chief for a guided tour. Meet mysterious creatures from the deep and follow a pirate treasure trail to find the hidden gold coins. Shark Party - Why not invite some sharks to your birthday party? Blue Reef’s shark expert will take party guests on a tour to uncover the amazing secrets of these ultimate predators. The birthday boy or girl can even help feed the sharks! Mermaids Party - Here’s a great way for little mermaids and mermen to celebrate their birthdays. A Blue Reef marine expert will lead a tour of the aquarium and introduce the amazing sea creatures that have inspired some of the most famous children's stories, legends, myths and fairytales.
