Winter Boom Booms Animal British Cup

russell[72].jpg
British bulldog Russell Winter blew up in perfect waves at Fistral beach to dominate the Animal British Cup, surfing with the cream of British surfers in a man on man format Russ took time off the WQS Tour to surf his home break and prove that he is still the number one power surfer in the UK. With no wind the waves were flawless and all the surfers were frothing to have some of the three to four foot surf.

Contest organizers and Animal made the call late on Friday afternoon  to move the  event  from Tolcarne to  Fistral  once the fresh swell started to arrive,  giving near perfect conditions at the UK’s premier surf  contest venue

Early standouts were Sam Lamiroy, Tom Butler and Animals riders Alan Stokes and Mitch Corbett.  The man on man format was welcomed by the competitors allowing them to concentrate of their surfing rather than hassling for waves in a four man heat. The semi finals were held is possibly the best surf for a contest this year, classic a frame low tide peaks and the level of surfing was unbelievable as Russ raised the bar. He had an in form Johnny Fryer but not even a spectacular no hands punt air from Fryer could stop the Bulldog as he consistently tore apart set waves lifting buckets of spray in to the heavens drawing nines and tens from the judges. The other semi saw two of the hottest young talents battle it out for the right to face Russ in the final, Oli Adams laid some big turns down but couldn’t match the intensity of Matt Capel who just edged him out.

The final was almost text book for Russ who opened with an 8.12 and backed it up with a 9.33 to combo the young gun Capel. The only way back was to attempt a series of massive air manoeuvres that had the crowd on the beach gasping. A relaxed and smiling Russell thanked the sponsors and organisers on the podium saying that he had enjoyed the event enormously.

Errant/Starboard - Stand Up Paddle Board Championships 2007

Perfect sunshine and 2-3ft glassy swell greeted the competitors at the UK's first ever Stand Up Paddling Surfing Championships sponsored by Errant Surf Holidays, Starboard and the Extreme Academy; providing a perfect setting for a historical day in UK Surfing.

Competitors from all over the country and as far away as Barbados turned up on mass to the Extreme Academy at Watergate Bay, Newquay to compete, hang out and meet up.

The event was split into two disciplines Surf and Distance. The surf was perfect for Stand Up Paddle Surfing and this allowed everybody to get out and ride some perfect set waves. As the heats progressed it was obvious who was hungry for the title - to be honest though most people were just happy to be out on the water riding perfect waves. Brian Talma (Starboard) from Barbados was pushing aside jet lag to catch some very stylish rides. Local hot shot Adam Zervas (C4) was revelling in the conditions, pulling off some stylish cut backs. Head Lifeguard from Watergate Bay Lewis Timson (Starboard/South Point) showed his S.U.P skills with some fluid nose rides and great wave selection in the low tide sets. 2 x European longboard champ, Elliott Dudley (C4) was also a man on a mission and got some of the longest rides of the day. In fact it was these 4 guys who made the most of the conditions and advanced to the 4 man final.

The final was dominated by two riders Elliot Dudley and Lewis Timson. Both showing their own style and approach to wave riding. They both rode some long waves to challenge for the top spot. In the end it was Elliot's nose rides that saw him take the top spot but Lewis' drop knee turns brought him within a whisker of stealing the title from Elliot's grasp. Third place went to Brain Talma from Barbados who was keeping the crowds entertained with his colourful Bajan style on and off the water. His familiar cry of "Action" could be heard all over the beach. Brian truly is an ambassador for Stand Up Paddle Surfing - promoting a chilled out vibe and always has a smile on his face . Adam Zervas finished 4th, after missing out on a few key rides. You can be sure that he will be back next time to challenge for the title.

The ladies saw Lucy Howell (Starboard) dominate ahead of Theresa Thomson (Starboard/South Point) in second and Marie Buchanan (Starboard) in third and the youngest contestant Charlotte Emsden in 4th

The Distance paddle was a gruelling affair and was dominated by four riders. Ozzy Dave Monaghan on his Starboard 12'6, Timo Mullen (Surftech/Starboard), John Hibbard (Starboard) and Neal Gent (Starboard). These four pulled out a healthy lead ahead of the chasing pack. It was Ozzy Dave who eventually stroked out ahead on his own to claim the win with Timo following being by 100 meters. By the finish line John Hibbard and Neal Gent were locked in their own private battle and only 2 meters separated them at the finish line. John somehow managed to find a final burst of energy to pip Neal into 3rd place.

Marie Buchanan (Starboard) came in ahead of Mel Shiplee (Jimmy Lewis) in the ladies.

Aside from all the battles at the top of the rankings it was an amazing day. Great weather, happy spectators, happy contestants all topped of with a few pints of Skinners beer!

Thanks to all that came along and supported the event. Big thanks to Shag, Michelle, Lucy, Steve and Adrianno for their help at the event and to all the competitors for being so chilled out and for helping make it a memorial day.

RIP CURL BOARDMASTERS 2007 GOES OFF

img_5852_copy.jpgThe Rip Curl Boardmasters Festival, Europe’s biggest surf, skate and music festival ended today after a hugely successful seven days of brilliant sun, world class surfing, skating and awesome live music.

Title sponsors Rip Curl consider the event to be one of the most successful to date, certainly the largest in 26 years, and as always, attracting over 250,000 people to the UK’s most famous surf spot.

The Men's Rip Curl Boardmasters 5 star World Qualifying Series (WQS) surfing contest ended on a high, with former Foster's ASP World Tour surfer Ben Bourgeois (USA) defeating Brazilian excitement machine Heitor Alves in tricky, 2-3ft (1m) surf.

The surfing contests started one week ago with 168 surfers, but at 4pm today there were only two competitors left standing on the winner's podium. For Bourgeois, the win launches him to second on the WQS Ratings, just 24 points behind WQS Tour leader Tiago Pires (PRT).

"I haven't won a contest in so long, so just being up there and getting that feeling is so awesome. I'm stoked," said Bourgeois after the presentation.

"I've been on a little roll lately and I just wanted to keep it going here in
England. I was just trying to take it heat by heat and it all came out my way at the end. I'm so happy."

The Unleashed summer nights hosted on a cliff top location at Watergate Bay, accompanied by a stunning sunset, proved to be the most successful Unleashed concert for the Rip Curl Boardmasters since it’s inception 3 years ago.  Headlined by the energetic Funeral For A Friend and melodic Ash with the afternoon sets fulfilled by The Subways and Fightstar on Friday 10th  August.

After six days of non-stop action at the Rip Curl Boardmasters, Paolo Nutini’s headline appearance at Unleashed on Saturday 11th August induced a refreshing atmosphere to the week-long shenanigans. Playing alongside the Watergate Bay surf spot, Paolo delivered an ambient set that captivated a 10,000 strong crowd.

The highlight of the evening was officially handed to Paolo Nutini who was joined by Unleashed acts Newton Faulkner, Scott Matthews and Ruarri Joseph on the orbital stage to deliver their rendition of Jungle Book’s ‘King of the swinger’s’ which instantly sent the audience regressing into a field of apes!!

The Relentless No Half Measures stage on Friday hosted hot new acts Enjoy Destroy, The Future and Reuben who encouraged an energy packed audience and delivered performances that are certain to see them continue to rise.  Saturday’s line-up in the marquee included electro DJ acts Tiny Dancers who threw down a resoundingly successful alternative to the mellow vibe on the main stage.

Relentless also premiered their eagerly awaited No Half Measures (NHM) Tour movie featuring highlights from the BMX and Wakeboard Tours. The NHM Vert skate Tour also took place over the week featuring the country’s 10 best (and unruliest) vert skate kids. The Tour proved a great success with all the kids skating incredibly well throughout the week. The proof was in the pudding with Sam Beckett and Sam Bosworth both qualifying for the Men’s Pro Skate Event Final. Bosworth came in 7th out of 16 original entries and Sam Beckett came third. Sam will be a dominant force in vertical skateboarding. Watch out!

At the Vans Summer Session Pool Gap, featured at Unleashed, Matt Crowhurst scooped the Best Trick Prize. The stunning pool gap constructed for the music site holds 200,000 gallons of water and was the
playground for some of the country’s biggest and best wakeboarders including Jonty Green, Marc Rossiter and James Young.

See you next year!
